Open Source in Embedded Systems Development
In the embedded systems sector one is likely to encounter new hardware, poorly tested development kits, and a tendency to incomplete or inaccurate documentation. In this regard, even well-known vendors are prone to frequent amendments.
Open source can offer a solution to the problem of being locked out from the necessary corrections in code and documentation, as bugs can literally be tracked down to their source. This, in turn, allows a development team to apply remedies in the form of workarounds and bug fixes at its own discretion.
Hardware vendors are developing an increasing understanding of how open source acts as a development model with cost-reducing benefits.
